Is abortion ever ok?

Before the Oscars and the stars came out to play there was the keyword abortions that was being searched for on technorati. I noted this on the feedscott blog a couple days ago. The theme was "how to do it yourself abortion" and "how to perform an abortion" among other abortion related search strings.

feedscott view of abortion

Abortion is the elimination of life be it conscious or unconscious. Living cells that are or will become a human being are being destroyed.

I am against abortion, but I defend the parent’s right to have a legal abortion. Even though the female carries the child, both parents should have equal say in the decision. In a case of rape or incest the pregnant mother should have the full and final say with consultation from family, friends, or a doctor at whatever age that pregnant mother is.

Is abortion ever ok?

There are a lot of people who say abortion is not ok, except in the case of rape, incest, or if the mother’s life is in danger. Abortion is never ok! There are options for adoption in the case of rape or incest. If the mother’s life is in danger then that becomes a medical decision and less of an ethical one.

A woman should never have to give herself an abortion, go to an underground clinic, or leave the state or country to have an abortion. This is part of the reason I support legal abortion. I do not agree with it, but I support it.

This is a hot and sensitive issue. All comments will be posted excluding personal attacks and profanity. Please feel free to share your view points.

Well, since nobody ever commented on your post, I will.

First of all, I appreciate your approach to the subject and your tone. And secondly, I agree with much of your article.

DNA gives an obvious answer to the humanity of the fetus. It may be undeveloped, but to say it is not human is nonsense. Likewise, to say that it is just part of its mother is inaccurate since its DNA is unique. And the cells are growing and reproducing, so there is no good argument against the fact that the unborn child is alive.

The discussion then necessarily moves to a question of whether a woman has the right to surgically or otherwise terminate the life of her unborn child and whether that child has any rights of its own. I would say that, no, except in a case of self-defense, our laws and moral codes prohibit taking the life another human. This same logic should extend to the womb.

There is a lot of talk these days about "personhood" these days and where the line between "mass of tissue with human DNA" and "human person" should be drawn. There is a concept being popularized that promotes the idea that at some point, while we are unarguably human, we are not yet a person, so it is not wrong to kill a human that isn't yet a person.

Personally, I think that's a ridiculous load of rhetoric fabricated to deal with the guilt that surrounds taking human life. This argument sites certain studies that suggest that cognizance isn't possible until a point later in the pregnancy. But if we are to say that the right to life is only available to "persons" with a certain level intelligence or connection with reality, then there is a problem extending this to the mentally handicapped, autistic, or those who are unconscious.

On the other hand, I think a lot of people have spent a lot of time waiting on the law to change, and I don't think that's necessary. We can work to change hearts and minds one at a time, and unlike an impersonal law, we can be there to walk through a hard pregnancy and parenthood with the women and men who choose life for their children.

How are you completely against abortion but you support it? You think it's never ok to have an abortion but you support the people who are for it...?
